Sarawak Premier Commits Billions To Transform Sibu Into A Modern Town

Sibu, 6 August - Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg reaffirmed his commitment to transform Sibu into a modern town, pledging to spare no expense in the ambitious redevelopment project.

Speaking at the 'Majlis Makan Malam Pemimpin Bersama Komuniti Sibu' event, Abang Johari emphasized the need for a wholehearted approach in the endeavor, declaring, "Jangan alang-alang (Don't be half-hearted). If it costs billions of ringgit, we will find a way to get those billions of ringgit."

Abang Johari outlined his vision for Sibu's development, extending beyond 2035, under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. He underscored that the restructuring plans would stimulate numerous economic activities, benefiting both the local community and the region.

"You should not expect what I said today, tomorrow Sibu will change, it is not possible. Rome was not built in one day. We will develop Sibu into a modern town with its own character," he added.

While the government is ready to allocate substantial funds for the project, the Premier stressed the importance of public and private sector collaboration. He explained that such cooperation would lead to economic returns once the development is completed.

Furthermore, Abang Johari highlighted the significance of community cooperation in the transformational journey.

He emphasized that politicizing the matter, especially regarding the government’s acquisition of land for restructuring purposes, should be avoided at all costs.

“Apart from that, this will also need cooperation from the people of Sibu because if this matter is politicized - for example, the government taking the land for restructuring purposes - there should not be somebody fanning it as an issue,” he stated.

“That is the problem now, but I am firm, and as long as I am the Premier, I want to restructure Sibu into a better place,” he added. -Sarawakku
